About BSFRF
Madison Heller-Shipley
Madison (Madi) Heller-Shipley is a PhD student at the University of Washington (UW), studying fisheries science in Dr. André Punt’s lab. She specializes in crustacean population dynamics, stock assessment, and management strategy evaluation, focusing on North Pacific crab stocks. Madi earned an MS in quantitative fisheries science from UW, where her research on Chionoecetes bairdi harvest control rules directly contributed to an update to Alaska state management in 2020. Madi has worked with BSFRF for ten years, playing a key role in field research and developing crab-specific studies in the Eastern Bering Sea. With extensive experience at sea (350+ days), she has helped design and execute gear comparison trials, collection charters, and standardized surveys. In 2020, she joined the BSFRF Science Advisor Team, combining hands-on field expertise and strong quantitative skills. Her work bridges the gap between data collection and statistical modeling, helping research findings translate to management-relevant insights.
